This restaurant was not inexpensive, but I thought it was worth the price, and very competitive when compared with other waterfront restaurants in San Francisco. And, there really is no better accompaniment to cioppino than that thick, sweet and sour San Francisco sourdough bread. Not only did the chef select a broad array of really tasty seafood to include in the stew, but the tomato stock was rich with complex spices. I have to say this was among the best, if not the best I've ever had. I've tasted this Portuguese fisherman's stew at restaurants all over America. I had one of the dishes that is most important to me: cioppino. My other family member had a fish trio that was beautifully plated and really delicious preparations. One of our party was vegetarian the staff and chef put some effort into finding a dish he could eat, which he did end up enjoying very much, but I thought they could have been a bit more accommodating. The fried scallops as a starter was a new preparation for me, but I thought they turned out very well. ![]() We started with interesting and delicious cocktails, then moved on to tasty and creative appetizers, wines by the glass, and beautiful, well-prepared entrees. 35 years later I am confident that quality is in evidence at the Fog Harbor Fish House. I recall in the late 1970s when Pier 39 was being built that locals were very concerned that quality would not be an ingredient in the new restaurants there. We enjoyed it so much we almost missed our ferry home. I took two young adult family members here for a late lunch on a rainy afternoon.
